Course Description:
In this fully online, asynchronous course, educators will explore the power, purpose, and potential of instructional/interactive read alouds in their classrooms to promote student learning. Supported by MollyNess’s Read Alouds for All Learners: A Comprehensive Plan for Every Subject, Every Day, and discussion forums, participants will engage with research-supported practices and realistic, classroom-ready strategies for implementing read alouds across grade levels (K-8) and content areas. Ness’s text is a practitioner’s guide to leveraging the instructional opportunities within read alouds.
This fully online course will deepen participants’ understanding of implementing interactive or instructional read alouds in the classroom. While the class is asynchronous, there are scheduled dates for posting, commenting, and assignments.
This course is designed for educators who are:
- New to instructional read alouds
- Ready for a refresher in instructional read alouds
- Reading aloud and looking to embed instructional opportunities
Participants can expect to:
- Read Read Alouds for All Learners: A Comprehensive Plan for Every Subject, Every Day by Molly Ness and additional articles or chapters focused on read-aloud instruction
- Conduct and reflect upon at least two read-alouds during the semester
- Develop a text set (‘text diet’) that can be used in the classroom
- Actively participate in discussion forums
- Collaborate and share resources on a digital platform like Canvas and Padlet
- Complete a final project that includes a practical classroom application and resources
- Write a reflection focused on the impact (or potential impact) on teaching, learning, and student outcomes in reading
BIO: Sarah Miller, M.ED., PLL Literacy Consultant
Sarah Miller has worked with teachers and students in Vermont schools since 2009. Prior to that, she began her career working with K-8 Dreamers at the “I Have a Dream” Foundation of Boulder County. Since then, Sarah has taught middle school English-Language Arts and Social Studies. She has also served as both a school and a district Literacy Instructional Coach in Chittenden County. In 2012, Sarah completed her M.Ed. at Saint Michael’s College in Reading. Across her years in education, Sarah has been focused on engaging readers and writers in meaningful ways, with access to literature and nonfiction that is relevant and accessible. She is particularly interested in supporting young people in developing robust reading and writing identities that build on their lives, interests, and passions. Sarah has worked to build vibrant literate communities in schools. Currently, Sarah is a literacy consultant with Partnerships for Literacy and Learning. She lives in Underhill, Vermont, with her husband, son, daughter, two dogs, and a cat.
